HEALING THE MASCULINE SOUL

Used on the recent Men's retreat for 26 guys across the city of Coventry this book is a great source of finding our roots back to "authentic Christian manhood".

My
UTMOST for HIS HIGHEST
[Oswald Chambers]
An unequallable year of personal devotions standing the test of time without doubt.
SURPRISED
BY THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT
[Jack Deere]
Why do we believe what we believe? Jack Deere shows us that much of what we believe about the Bible is ‘second’ or ‘third’ hand. In other words we haven’t formed an opinion based on careful study of the Bible; rather we’ve believe what other people tell us it says. This book helps peel away our unconscious prejudices so that we can be exposed to the word of God.

GRACE
AND TRUTH PARADOX
[Randy Alcorn]
This little book is a treasure trove of images. John’s gospel says that: ‘The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.’ Randy Alcorn shows how Jesus demonstrates 100% grace and 100% truth at the same time.

RAGAMUFFIN
GOSPEL
[Brennan Manning]
This former Roman Catholic priest demonstrates the love of Christ in the most dramatic and challenging of ways. He paints a picture of the devastating awfulness of legalism.

CHASING
THE DRAGON
[Jackie Pullinger]
Is God at work today? Read this biography and you’ll have no doubt that the living God is as active in the world today as he was 2000 years ago. Can he use me or you? There’s no-one he can’t use!

SPIRITUAL
DEPRESSION
[MartinLloyd-Jones]
'Without question
one of the greatest preachers of the 20th century, Lloyd-Jones answers
the question, ‘Why are so many Christians lacking in joy.’ Originally
delivered as sermons each chapter is a brilliant, forensic insight. (Although
not on this list, ‘Experiencing Spiritual Breakthrough’ by
Bruce Wilkinson is in many ways a valuable successor to ‘Spiritual
Depression’).

PURPOSE
DRIVEN LIFE
[Rick Warren]
God chooses to throw up great Christian teachers; Rick Warren is one of them. This book is written as a 40 day devotional with a difference. It tells us why we are here, what God’ plans for us are and how to get on with living our lives.

AN
ECHO IN THE DARKNESS
[Francine Rivers]
A work of fiction woven into a Biblical framework is River’s setting for a magnificent, heart rending tale of God’s awesome grace. This is God’s love worked out in the lives of cruel, greedy and ambitious people, each changed as God’s love touches their lives through the unselfish and unsung charity of people who have every reason to shun them.

CELEBRATION
OF DISCIPLINE
[Richard Foster]
Discipline is almost a dirty word these days. We’re so obsessed with unconditional grace that we forget that we work out our salvation in ‘fear and trembling’. Jesus said, ‘Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.’

SYTEMATIC
THEOLOGY
[Wayne Grudem]
There are few ‘theology’ books as accessible or readable as this one. I don’t agree with everything Grudem says but I greatly admire his masterful and passionate presentation. He is a charismatic evangelical who defends the Bible.
A highbrow theologian who writes of God’s abundant love in ways that touch my heart. Piper has written this wonderful book in the crucible of pain and doubt. It is a joy to read.
